… to winner to take home Kshs 250,000/-
Nairobi September 15, 2011 …
The 2011 edition of the annual Kenya Airways Masai Mara Half-Marathon has been scheduled to take place on 19th November, 2011. This will be the third time that this unique marathon will take place in Lemek Conservancy within the environs of Fairmont Mara Safari Club.
Speaking during a media briefing where Kenya Airways announced its sponsorship of Kshs. 9 million for this year’s event, Kenya Airways Area Manager, Kenya Ms. Nita Nagi said that they expected this year’s edition to attract more participants especially from key tourism markets. “We have already registered a high level of interest in the event from both from co sponsors, athletes and tourists; we expect that this will be a much bigger marathon than last year,” she explained.
The KQ Masai Mara Half-Marathon aims to raise funds that will be channeled towards conservation of the Mara ecosystem and raise awareness of the plight of the stakeholders within the ecosystem. People living in the Ecosystem are in dire need of clean water, proper sanitation, healthcare, food security and education
Ms. Nagi noted that this sponsorship was therefore in line with the Airline’s Corporate Social Responsibility Initiatives. “Kenya Airways invests in initiatives geared towards supporting communities in countries that it flies to in the areas of education, environment, water and health as part of its contribution to the sustainable development of its destinations.”
She added, “Kenya Airways seeks to work with various communities across Africa to improve educational infrastructure. This is because a strong educational foundation will ensure that our young people are appropriately skilled for the demanding job market.”
Co Sponsor, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts Kenya has sponsored the event since its inception in 2009. Commenting on this, Serge Simard, Regional Vice President for Africa & India said, ‘Sports Tourism in Kenya has significantly grown over the years and it has helped increased tourism revenue and encouraged follow-on tourism opportunities. One of our goals is to use the Marathon as a catalyst for promoting both local and international tourism and increasing the visibility of the Masai Mara’.
‘Our primary objective is to raise funds towards conservation efforts in Masai Mara, as well as help provide water, health and sanitation to the communities living within and outside the Olchorro Oirowua Conservancy.’
‘Participants will have a unique opportunity of running among the resident Mara wildlife and will get to view one of the world richest reserves’ Simard concluded.
The Masai Mara National Reserve is a legend in its own right; it is not only the home of the famous “Big Five” but also hosts the great annual wildebeest migration which has been termed as the 7th new wonder of the world. The inaugural Masai Mara Half-Marathon took place in November 2009 and attracted 352 participants. Since then, the half-marathon has continued to attract increasing numbers of participants with last year’s edition attracting 850 runners. This year’s edition is expected to be even bigger as over 1000 runners are expected to compete for top honours.
The main race will be the half marathon (21 kilometer), which is open for fun runners and elite runners. Other categories are; 5km individual Fun race, 5km corporate team race and a special javelin throw event for the local masai morans.
Total prize money for the 3rd edition of the KQ Masai Mara marathon now totals Kshs. 1,032,000/- with the top runner’s receiving Kshs. 250,000 in both men and women’s categories. Total Prize Structure is as outline in the table below:

Kenya Airways continues to invest in the development of sports and in particular athletes in this country. Nagi pointed out that Kenya was well known for its athletes who were flying the Kenyan flag high and winning accolades in several international competitions.
“As the international flag carrier Kenya Airways will be proud to be associated with another local marathon that breeds global athletes, just as other successive ones have done,” she said.
The KQ Masai Mara Half-Marathon organizers noted that the registration process had commenced at the marathon’s offices located at NHIF Building, Mezannine Floor, as well as at Kenya Airways Retail outlets in Nairobi’s Barclays Plaza, Sarit Centre and Yaya Centre and in Mombasa Office.
Registration will also take place at Athletics Kenya Offices in Nairobi’s Riadha House as well as all other AK offices countrywide.
