KQ installs next generation IFE system
Tuesday, October 6, 2009: Kenya Airways has Managed and installed the most modern In-Flight Entertainment (IFE) System that offers passengers real value for money.
The next generation of IFE is suitable for all travelers and targets to improve the accessibility of in-flight entertainment. This is the latest available system from Rockwell Collins and offers airlines a new generation IFE head unit.
“I am very proud of the technical department for this monumental achievement which has involved conception, design, development, planning and installation. These modifications have been done through teamwork from all line departments,” Kenya Airways Technical Director Allan Fullilove said.
He said that in addition to increased movie channels, the economy class passengers will also be treated to the full Audio and Video on Demand (AVOD) IFE just like the premier world J-class passengers. Fullilove noted that one Boeing 777 has already been installed with the improved IFE system known as Digital Total Entertainment System (dTES).
Other benefits to the passenger include a fast and seamless service that can offer up to 200 movies in 4 different languages with the capability to analyze passenger preference and customize entertainment selection to individual preference. Allan Fullilove added that this new addition complements the Airline’s promise of a Warm, Caring and Friendly service to its customers.
The other 3 B777 are scheduled for installation between November 25-December 20th
The system presents quite a number of advantages over the old TES, IFE system. The modification represents a first for Kenya Airways from the technical department as it is the first modification undertaken by the team to an Federal Aviation Authority, Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) level and represents a new level of maintenance and more importantly, the engineering level workmanship, he said.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspectors were in Nairobi for the whole duration of the work to oversee the installation and witness the capabilities of Kenya Airways staff in various departments.
“We will continue to re-equip the Boeing 777 fleet during upcoming “C-Checks” – the most thorough type of maintenance work performed by an airline. We have also planned other STC related-work in 2009-2010 on installation of Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS), Boeing 777 Performance Improvement Package and Electronic flight bag modifications,” he added.
He said the technical team are proud to demonstrate the level of competence to perform huge tasks internally very successfully.
The installation of IFE system is geared at increasing service reliability and install the latest safety systems as well as crew and operational aids.
