Kenya Airways In Focus
18th August 2008 ... Kenya Airways continues to modernise its fleet with its 24 aircraft fleet being one of the youngest in the continent. The airline’s fleet consists of 23 Boeing planes and 3 Embraer 170 jets. Since 2001, Kenya Airways has spent over Usd 1.04 billion on modernising its fleet and upgrading its ground handling equipment and its technology to cater for its 43 destinations in 39 countries.
In this year alone, the airline has taken delivery of 2 planes, its third Embraer 170 Long Range (LR) Jet and its third Boeing 737-800. Kenya Airways is scheduled to take delivery of two additional Boeing 737-800s later in the year bringing the total number of B737-800 in the fleet to 5.The 737-800 aircraft is instrumental to Kenya Airways strategy of connecting Africa to the rest of the world. With its modern cabin, increased range and larger baggage capacity, it enables Kenya Airways to develop its African network with the customer needs in mind.
The Embraer 170 LR is configured in a comfortable single class layout, sitting 72 passengers. Short ground turnaround time, common parts and low maintenance costs are among the key benefits of the Embraer aircraft. In an environment of ever increasing oil prices, the high fuel efficiency of the E170 is an asset to better maximize revenue.
Kenya Airways has already placed firm orders for 6 Boeing 787s Dreamliners with options for 6 more with deliveries expected to begin in 2012.
The airline has opted to slow down on its network growth and has instead a strategy to consolidate its position. In November this year, Kenya Airways will commence operations to the Madagascar capital of Antananarivo. The airline has also revised its network timetable with increased frequencies to some of its West African destinations and to the Far East. In June this year, Kenya Airways resumed flights its thrice weekly flights to Paris. The flights had been suspended earlier in the year following the post-election violence. This same strategy has is also placing additional focus on investment in modernising and streamlining its systems as well as enhancing the skills set and capacities of its staff.
