East Africa Classic Rally
Saturday 19th November 2011 saw Mombasa filled with excitement as Rally enthusiasts and the local community gathered at the Tusks on Moi Avenue for the Ceremonial Flag Off of the Kenya Airways East African Safari Classic Rally. Over 50 drivers from all over the World gathered in Mombasa to take part in this prestigious event sponsored by the National Carrier Kenya Airways. The Airline’s Chairman Mr. Evanson Mwaniki was present to officially Flag off the Rally. Participants include the 2009 winner, Kenyan Champion Ian Duncan navigated by Amaar Slatch in a Ford Capri who was the first off the ramp in the world’s greatest rally. Other big names include 2010 Kenya champion Alastair Cavenagh and his co-driver Carl Tundo in a Ford Escort Mark 2. The former Kenyan Rally ace, Patrick Njiru navigated by Travis Prastana driving a Porsche 911 is also one of the top contenders. Kenya Airways very own Samira Khan and her co-driver Safina Khan [not related] are the only women’s crew taking part in this year’s event and will be driving a Ford Escort Mark 1. Away from the races there was also a welcome Cocktail at the Whitesands Hotel the same evening where invited guests mingled with the drivers.
